I am electrifying!
Ha, ha! I’m joking.
Wait, no I’m not!
I’m referring to the static electricity build-up, that causes me to shock…, er, I mean get shocked, by everything I touch!
Every winter, thanks to the woollen clothing that gets charged with static electricity, I begin to get shocked by almost everything around me.
Some mornings, I’ll stumble out of bed, head to the bathroom and as I touch the metal doorknob, “Zap!”. Well, that’s one way to jumpstart the day!
Or I’ll reach for my phone, and “bzzt”. Ouch!
Or I’ll touch my husband’s hand, and sparks fly (no, not the good kind!)
It gets a little annoying to say the least.
And sometimes, when the air is really dry, and I’m wearing a polyester jacket, the shocks are pretty solid. Sometimes the person standing next to me can even hear them!
I’ve learnt a few tricks to deal with them, though. If I must touch a metal doorknob, I first earth myself by touching the wall, and only then reach for the doorknob. Also, avoid rubber-soled shoes. And, slather on tons of body lotion on hands and arms (apologies for any greasy doorknobs left behind).
It seems to work, and I’ve had far fewer shocks this year.
Except for when I stepped on the weighing scale last week!
